The book starts with the marriage of young princess Elisa
and the older King Alejandro. They journey to his larger kingdom face troubles
on the way there and then soon after settling in, Elisa gets kidnapped and
begins a whole new journey and learns things that change her and shape her into
a better person and queen.
I admit that I didn’t quite like Elisa in the beginning
because she seemed a bit lazy and sometimes appeared to be too nice, but she grew on me. I enjoyed following her on her
journey to win the war against Invierne. Her conversations with other
characters seemed realistic and I found myself rooting for her and her friends
in the end.
The amount of world building in this book sated me and my
desire to know about the countries and what’s going on. I felt that there
could’ve been more details added about Invierne, but overall I think the author
did a great job at presenting the world at a good pace.
I loved this book and it’s now officially one of my
favorites. I cannot wait to start The Crown of Embers and finish with the
conclusion, The Bitter Kingdom. If you enjoy high fantasy, then this is
definitely the book for you.

This book was a surprise for me. I really loved it -- and I'm not to big on fantasy, but it had "the rest" so I am hooked. Can't wait to get my hands on the third book! Great review!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't really a big high fantasy person until I read this book and Cinda Williams Chima's Seven Realms series. I NEED THE BITTER KINGDOM NOW!!! haha:)

Elisa was definitely too nice at the beginning of this series. I wanted her to stand up for herself and not play the "fat princess" role -- and I love that she eventually did, even though it took a kidnapping to motivate her. SUCH a great series!!
