Review(+ Giveaway!): Mystic City by Theo Lawrence

Aria Rose, youngest scion of one of Mystic City's two ruling rival families, finds herself betrothed to Thomas Foster, the son of her parents' sworn enemies. The union of the two will end the generations-long political feud—and unite all those living in the Aeries, the privileged upper reaches of the city, against the banished mystics who dwell below in the Depths. But Aria doesn't remember falling in love with Thomas; in fact, she wakes one day with huge gaps in her memory. And she can't conceive why her parents would have agreed to unite with the Fosters in the first place. Only when Aria meets Hunter, a gorgeous rebel mystic from the Depths, does she start to have glimmers of recollection—and to understand that he holds the key to unlocking her past. The choices she makes can save or doom the city—including herself.

I was really excited to read Mystic City because of its interesting synopsis and when I got a copy, I was so excited to read it; however, this book was somewhat of a disappointment to me. The story line itself was interesting and I liked reading about the mystics underground. The romance however fell flat for me and the main character’s connections to others just weren’t there.

Her relationships with the two main love interests were rushed and I could see the reason for one of them, but the other went way too fast for no reason.  If you don’t enjoy insta-love, you might want to go into this book wary. Even though Aria had family and friends surrounding her, I didn’t feel any sort of connection to any of them. Aria’s relationships with her parents and brother seemed nonexistent because they treated her like a prized pet and not a member of the family.

Some of my favorite scenes in this book were when the mystics used their mystic powers. I really hope to see more of that in book two!

Overall, the book was good but I wouldn’t recommend this to people who are currently looking for the next best thing. 3 Stars!
